Essentials in Nursing and Practice

Reflection

I never had considered being a nurse until recently. For two years straight I wanted to go into pharmacy and become a pharmacist. That was until someone that I loved had gotten seriously hurt. When that happened, all I wanted to do was take care of them. From doing simple services like getting them a glass of water or something way more than that like helping them go to the bathroom. I enjoyed helping this person in need and that is how I figured out what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. With this information, I would love to become a labor and delivery or NICU nurse. There are a lot of things you need to consider about yourself when you want to become a nurse, especially a labor and delivery or NICU nurse. Nurses are always working under restricted time and have great empathy, compassion, and respect. With that being said, I feel that those traits to be a nurse are the ones that I am able to demonstrate the best.

There are multiple ways that I am able to demonstrate working well under very limited time. Only one example that really sticks out to me when I think about this attribute that I have. One thing that I really enjoy doing is play competitive video games, specifically Valorant. With the way you play Valorant, it requires fast thinking and even faster execution. I am very educated on the game Valorant because I have been playing it for the past five years. I was not good at Valorant from the day I started playing. The more I played the game, the more information I was able to obtain, and that is how I am able to fastly think of what is the proper thing to do at that moment. This kind of reminds me of going to school to become a nurse for years to use your skills in the real world. When you take the time to learn and educate yourself in things that you are interested in, then you will be able to think fast and execute your ideas in the most efficient way possible. This skill would work for any specification in the nursing world.

My life moral for the longest time has been empathy. The true definition of empathy is, “the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.” I truly believe that empathy is what makes us human. I have the ability to feel for other people and understand what they are going through. That is especially when they are in pain, and that is where my compassion comes into play. I remember being little and when someone else got hurt and I witnessed the accident, I would literally cry for the said person because I could literally feel the pain they were in. I would tell my mom, “OWW mom, it hurts, I can feel it!” I have now grown out of the whole, ‘I can feel their pain’ but I can still feel their pain if that makes sense. With those two attributes there is one ties them both together, respect. When being a nurse you need to be able to respect others. Whether that is their boundaries, religion, culture, background, sexual orientation, etc. I grew up in a very respectful household. That means that I have been around respect my whole life. That being said I am able to respect the wishes of other people and the way that they wish to be treated.

With all of this information about having the ability to work great under pressure and having empathy, compassion, and respect I think I would fit in great for two different specifications of nursing. The first one would be labor and delivery. I would love to be at the bedside of a mother and be able to teach her the correct ways of labor quickly and with precision with regards to their boundaries. The next nurse specification that I believe I would be great at would be a neonatal intensive care unit. I believe this because with sick babies I will be able to think faster on how to care for them the best while also considering how to respect the babies comfort levels and also the mothers wishes.
